got a buddy thinking of putting an aussie in his yota. he's wanting to throw it in the rear i think but how would it act in the front in 2wd. anyone have lunchbox locker in their's? just looking for some suggestions/advice on which would be best.

If he's got locking hubs, it will have no effect in 2WD. If he doesn't have locking hubs, it should still have little effect.

Old Rovers are like strippers. The things they do well, they do very, very well. Everything else you just have to put up with. |

Actually, if I'm correct, I believe an aussie locker is much like a detroit, requiring a torque input to actuate locking. So, even with the hubs locked in, as long as you have the t-case in 2wd with no power transfer to the front axle, you would not feel the locker. Someone more familiar with aussies want to confirm this?

As I recall, j_cuz has a lunchbox in the front of his TJ. I think it clicks when he goes around turns in 2WD, excepting the noise, it doesn't do anything else. I'm sure he'll chime in with more details.

Yup. I only hear clicks in 2wd (newer Jeeps have no lockouts, so gears are always turning). It sometimes makes a loud noise when I lock up the tires in 2wd, but doesn't change performance. In 4wd, it will stay unlocked rolling around corners, but if I am driving in snow and slipping and putting power onto it, it locks up. Acts a lot like a front wheel drive car in 4wd when there is a lot of slipping (read understeer).
As for the front vs rear, I think I like it better in the front. Allows my Jeep to pull me over things. But one disadvantage is that if you are going up a steep hill, your weight shifts back and you have less traction on the front. If it is a trail truck, I would weld the rear and Aussie the front. If it isn't, then I would probably still vote to put it in the front.

What size tires?
Stock axles?
Trail only or DD?
For a trail rig I would put it in the front.......weld rear.
For a DD I would put it in the front and not weld the rear.

its got the stock 8" with 33s and the manual locking hubs. im used to my yj, i forgot all about that thing having locking hubs. its a trail rig mostly but gets drove locally to wheel and what not so welded rear prolly isnt up his alley.
sounds like the front would be best just for the sake of when its on the road. thats what i figured but a few of the wheelers at the toyota factory he works with have been telling him to lock the rear first. thought i would see what everyone thought. thanks for the replies
